Acropolis New Improvements for Full Access to Disabled Visitors
The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports has prioritized the improvement of the visiting conditions of the monuments at the Acropolis in Athens, which will enable not only disabled citizens but also those with other mobility or health problems to have complete access to the buildings upon the Holy Rock.
With the approach to the Acropolis having been completely redesigned, visitors will enjoy a view of the mountain and its monuments that is the same as that seen by the ancient Greeks.
According to the Ministry’s statement , “it is part of the study for the restoration of the terrain of the ancient sanctuary done by the academic and chairman of the Acropolis Monuments Preservation Committee Manolis Korre, the architect with the most complete knowledge of all the monuments on the Holy Rock.”
The statement concluded “The configurations, horizontally and in terms of elevation, follow the archaeological findings over the years, restoring the ancient route of the Panathinaion Way.
“The project is expected to be delivered on December 3, 2020, together with the new, safe state-of-the-art slope lift, making the experience of visiting the Acropolis totally different”.
The use of cement to pave the pathways atop the Acropolis has stirred negative reactions from archaeologists. However, the material used is an architectural concrete, containing only 12% of cement. As a result, the smooth, durable and stable surfaces will ensure smooth and safe movement, while wheelchairs will be able to move freely.
