Athens - Delphi - Olympia - Sparta - Mycenae - Nauplion

southern greece activity mapDay 1: ATHENS-USA.  Departure from US for transatlantic flight to Athens.

Day 2: ATHENS. Arrival in Athens Eleutherios Venizelos International Airport. Meeting and transfer by private coach and assistance to your centrally located hotel near the Plaka area. Orientation tour. Welcome dinner in selected taverna. Overnight.

Day 3: ATHENS.  After breakfast, walk with your guide to the Agora, visit, and the Roman Market. Afternoon free to stroll in Plaka. Dinner on your own. Overnight with breakfast.

Day 4: ATHENS.  Morning sightseeing tour of Athens on foot with your private guide/lecturer, visiting the Acropolis,  and the Dionysos Theater.  Lunch on your own in Plaka.  Afternoon drive along the Riviera Attica. Visit the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.  Visit of St.Paul’s Nunnery in Laurion, where young nuns from all over Europe produce their own organic products. Late afternoon return to Athens. Dinner. Overnight in Athens.

Day 5:   ATHENS - EGINAMorning departure
after breakfast by private bus and guide to the port of Athens, Pireaus. Ferry boat ride to the island of Egina (1  ½ hrs ride) to visit theTemple of Aphaia, lunch (included) fresh fish, at the seaside and stroll around Aigina's town (try the famous pistachio nuts, indigenous to the island). Return by ferry to Pireaus. Overnight in Athens.

Day 6: ATHENS- DELPHI.  Morning departure after breakfast for 7-days land tour in mainland Greece.  Drive to Thebes.  Visit the museum. . Via Levadia, to Arachova, a traditional alpine village on the slopes of Mount Parnassos. Dinner in the restaurant Bacchus and overnight in Delphi.

Day 7: DELPHI. Morning visit of Delphi, the site of the famous oracle of the ancient times, and its Museum. Lunch break on your own in Delphi. Afternoon time at  leisure to explore the town of Arachova with its beautiful landscape. Dinner in Arachova and overnight.

Day 8: DELPHI- OLYMPIA. Morning departure for Olympia. Drive over Nafpaktos, small historical town, the Lepanto of the medieval times, known for its famous battle, to Antirion. Cross the new bridge to Rio and on to Patras . Pass by Kotili (near Kalogreia) to visit the national park famous for its bird sanctuary. Continue and visit Ancient Elias. Then on to Ancient Olympia. Dinner and overnight.

Day 9: OLYMPIA. Hiking day. Put on your hiking shoes, bring water and your lunch bag and off in the morning by bus toward the Neda canyon (about one hour's drive), along with the local trekking expert, Panagiotis. Pass by Ancient Lepraio, Old Fygalaia and Ancient Krine and hike for approximately two hours along the river to reach our destination, the White Waterfall. Lunch on the way amidst peaceful scenery. On the way back hike for another two hours to reach our bus. In the  afternoon return to hotel for dinner and overnight in Olympia.

Day 10: OLYMPIA- SPARTA. Early morning visit of the site of Olympia, where the first Olympic Games took place. Visit the Santuary of Zeus, the Stadium and the Museum departure for the ancient rival city-state of Athens, Sparta. Depart midday, pass by Kalo Nero and Kalamata, over the Taygetos gorge. Arrive in Sparta for dinner and overnight;

Day 11: SPARTA- NAUPLION. Morning visit to the medieval Byzantine settlement of Mystras. Visit the churches with the unique frescoes, the Palace and possible hike to the Fortress at the top. Depart for the first capital of liberated  Greece, Nauplion. Stroll around the picturesque old town and its port. Dinner and overnight. in Nauplion

Day 12: NAUPLION-MYCENAE-TIRYNS-NAUPLION. Morning departure from Nauplion to visit Mycenae, the Mycenean Acropolis with its Lions' Gate, the Palace and the Tholos tombs. Then, continue to Tiryns. Return to Nauplion and climp up the Venetian Fortress, Palamidi, with amazing views of the town. Dinner in Nauplion and overnight.

Day 14: EPIDAURUS- CORINTH. Morning departure to visit the Sanctuary of Ascleipios, the god of Healing with its well preserved theater of Epidaurus, world famous for its acoustics. Continue to Corinth for a visit of Ancient  Corinth and drive to Acrocorinth. Overnight in Corinth with dinner.

Day 15: CORINTH-ISTHMIA-ELEUSIS-ATHENS. Spend the morning exploring the site of Isthmia and continue to Eleusis for visit. Afternoon return to Athens.   Dinner and overnight in Athens.

Day 16: ATHENS.  Day at leisure. Option to go to Pireaus to visit the  Pireaus Museum or visit Benaki or the Cycladic Art Museum. Farewell dinner in selected taverna and overnight in Athens.

Day 17: ATHENS-USA. Morning transfer by bus and assistance to the airport for return flight to the US.
